How to Buy a Kiln

Buying a kiln, for most consumers, is an exciting experience. But there are a few things to watch out for. Here's a few important points to consider:

1. Know your voltage. Before calling to order your new kiln call an electrician or your electric utility to find out your voltage. Buying the wrong voltage kiln can result in substandard results, and shortened element life. Conversion after purchase is expensive, so find out in advance. Now is also a good time to ask a qualified electrician for an estimate on installing a receptacle for your new kiln. We will be happy to answer any questions or recomend an electricain that has experience installing kilns.

2. Know your phase. This is another question for your electrician, you may have three-phase power. Three-phase kilns cost a little more, but they work right the first time with three-phase power.

3. Know the size you need. This is often the hardest decision to make when buying a kiln. Some kilns can be expanded after purchase with a blank ring or expansion ring, but this is often a poor substitute for a large enough kiln. By thinking about your present needs and what direction your work might go in the future, you can get a better idea of what size to buy. Larger kilns give you the option of exploring larger work.

4. Be ready on the big day. Have a few friends over on the day your kiln arrives. Kilns are heavy, and the more hands the better. When you begin unpacking your kiln, be sure to read the directions first, and if you have questions call Krueger Pottery for assistance!
